Flor de Jamaica (Hibiscus flower tea)
Flor de Jamaica are the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower used across Mexico to make “Agua de Jamaica” – a vivid ruby tea with a tart, cranberry‑like flavour. Brew it hot for a warming herbal tea, or chill it over ice for a super refreshing agua fresca you can sweeten to taste and spike with lime.
Simple brewing directions (tea / agua fresca)
-
Use about 15 g dried Flor de Jamaica per 750 ml water.
-
Bring the water just to a boil, remove from heat, add the flowers and steep for 8–10 minutes for tea, up to 20 minutes for a stronger concentrate.
-
Strain out the flowers. Sweeten with sugar, agave or honey to taste and add a squeeze of lime if you like.
-
For iced Agua de Jamaica, top up the concentrate with cold water, chill, and serve over plenty of ice.
